Since the release of Mokoomba‘s record ‚Tusona: tracings in the sand‘ last fall a lot has happend for Zimbabwe’s most successful musical export. The album’s first single ‚Nzara hapana‘ won them a golden record at home for song of the year at ZBC (Zimbabwean Broadcasting Corporation) and had them play a number of prominent shows and festivals in Zimbabwe and neighbouring countries. The album also went No 1 in the World Music Charts Europe and collected raving reviews all over the world. Now it is time to follow up with some remixes.
Sometimes things just fall in place. That is definately the case for the first two remixes by L.A. based producer Jacknife Lee known for his work with U2, REM, The Hives, Two Door Cinema Club, but also Rokia Koné and many others. Hear what he has to say: „I came across Mokoomba through David Byrne’s “music from shithole countries” playlist. The sound of the group stood out. Their voices are fantastic. I was making a record with a band called Two Door Cinema Club and thought Mokoomba could be great on a few songs. We were in Los Angeles, far from them - or so I thought. I emailed them to ask to see if they might be interested in collaborating and crazily they said they were touring the states and would be in L.A. in a few days! What are the chances of that. My family went to see the show and we asked them if they like to come to our house for some food and recording. They were beautiful people and I wanted to keep working with them. These mixes were done during their album recording sessions. I’m honored to be allowed access to artists with such a unique points of view like Mokoomba. They are a treasure.“ Now enjoy the result of this cooperation.

The production lays down an enthralling soulful, funky blend of modern and traditional that allows Rokia Koné's powerful vocals to really shine through. I'm so glad I was introduced to this! Colin M.
